Biography
Dr. Brandt is director of the Marine Sciences Laboratory at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The Marine Sciences Laboratory is a multiprogram research and development organization headquartered in Sequim, Washington, with additional offices in Seattle and Portland, Oregon. The Laboratory’s research portfolio is focused on coastal environmental health and restoration, sustainable ocean energy, understanding and mitigating effect of climate change on coastal systems, and national security. He is responsible for continuous renewal of the laboratory’s capability, equipment, and facilities that are needed to create and execute basic and applied research in these focus areas at a national impact level.
Prior to this position, Dr. Brandt was responsible for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s $20M business portfolio in environmental sustainability, expert delivery for $80M of environmental projects, and technical group manager. Dr. Brandt has developed and managed environmental research projects for government and industrial clients for over 20 years. He is an ecologist specializing in biological fate and effects of contaminants. His research includes developing and evaluating habitat-based assessment and restoration methods, developing and applying risk assessment tools, and conducting studies of contaminant uptake and transport in biota. Contaminants research includes metals, radionuclides, crude oil, and oil byproducts in terrestrial and aquatic systems.
Dr. Brandt is Adjunct Professor in the Zoology Department at Washington State University. He serves as a peer reviewer for several international journals in the areas of mammalian field studies, oil and gas industry effects on the environment, and ecological risk assessment.
